Waste Management PGA TOUR Picks Recover Brands as Sustainable Apparel Partner

Lacing up their golf spikes, Recover Brands is heading to “The Greatest Show On Grass” – or the Waste Management Phoenix Open on January 29th-February 4th – as their official Sustainable Apparel Partner. Recover – a Charlotte, NC based sustainable apparel company – will be making and supplying Polos, Sports Tees, and Coozies from its 100% recycled product line for the Arizona stop on the PGA TOUR.

“The WM Phoenix Open continues to improve its sustainability efforts year after year, and in 2018 will take things full circle by partnering with Recover,” said Bill Johnston, Recover’s Co-Founder. “The new license between the PGA TOUR and Recover affords the opportunity for the WM Phoenix Open to sell merchandise made from 100% recycled materials. Given the events zero waste initiatives, the partnership is a perfect fit.

The WM Phoenix Open is the highest-attended tournament on the PGA TOUR and claims to be the most sustainable sporting event in the world. Among other eco-friendly initiatives, the event boasts a four-year record of repurposing 100 percent of all waste generated for beneficial use. Theoretically, some of this year’s plastic bottle consumption could go into the production of their future Recover event apparel.

The PGA TOUR will be using a variety of our 100% recycled products at the WM Phoenix Open, including our Recover Polo which is made with a blend of upcycled cotton and recycled PET, our Sport Tee which is made entirely with recycled PET (just 8 bottles to make 1 shirt!), and our coozies which are made from upcycled neoprene surfing wetsuits,” said Johnston. “A lot of the post-consumer recycled plastic bottles that we use to make our products actually come from Waste Management’s recycling programs, so it’s really cool to see that waste go back into first-quality products that the event is selling

An environmentally conscious company, Recover’s method of creating comfortable active apparel out of discarded plastic bottles and upcycled cotton has resulted in diverting over 5 million plastic bottles out of landfills, plus a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, 66% reduction in energy consumption, and 55% reduction in water consumption over their competition. They also don’t use dye in the creation of their shirts, opting instead to presort the plastic and cotton by color.
